Introducing a partnership with the American Cancer Society! We are offering a "Celebration Java" which donates all its profits to Relay for Life. You can stop by either of our stores and help the cause while enjoying a great cup of coffee. It's $12 per 12oz bag. Holidays are Coming!
- Audra MarxOct 27, 2009

I'm so excited about a new partnership! We're featuring Gold Mountain Farm from the highlands outside of Managua, Nicaragua as our Holiday Coffee. It's our 'Coffee with a Conscience'. We will be contributing $1 for every pound sold this season to Coffee Kids, a great nonprofit helping children in coffee communities. You can find out more at www.coffeekids.org. But even better are all the local benefits this coffee farm gives to its community: the highest salaries, the first library, medical assistance and more. It's definitely a coffee we can feel good about, not to mention it's some of the best coffee I've tried out of Central America.

back to school
- AudraAugust 24, 2009

Well, it's that time again. The kids go back and a natural routine can occur. Muddy's is staying open later Tue-Sat nights; until 9. (8 on Monday) Still 8 am - 6 pm Sunday. Nine Bars is currently open 6a to 6p (and closed on Sundays). Drive thru makes it easy!

We're roasting our own coffee at our Nine Bars location on Sundays & Thursday afternoons. And our star pastry chef, Esther, is knocking out some killer treats! Thanks to the Coast Guard for bringing them here, even if it's only temporary. Daily scones, coffee cake, cheesecake, crispie treats, brownies (coming soon - salted caramel & chipotle pecan brownies!!!), cinnamon rolls, sticky buns, soft pretzels, fruit crisp, quiches (and more that I know I'm forgetting). Most of these can be picked up at Muddy's too, if you're lucky enough to be there when we drop off the day's supply.

Come catch us at the Taste of Elizabeth City this Saturday night!

Hello All

We're just getting back from touring the East coast of Australia, where we found loads of great coffee, little farmers, big farmers, coffee on the side of the road and lots more stuff. Check out our Facebook page for pics soon. Can't wait to share the stories with all of you.

Nine Bars Info
- AudraMarch 21, 2009

I'm updating info about Nine Bars, because there's been many comments linked to a recent newspaper article. It seemed to leave out our location - which is 1725A City Center Blvd (the back road behind IHOP) off Halstead Ext. Our phone number is 337-NINE(6463). Yes, you can special order cakes (with 48hrs notice), cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, chocolate eclairs, and anything else Esther makes.

Our bakery schedule is something like this: scones, biscotti, cookies, brownies, cheesecake, tea cake, ganache cake & others DAILY. Fresh cinnamon rolls MONDAY (at about noon), fresh chocolate eclairs FRI. We are trying to figure out how to schedule the cinnamon rolls on the weekend as well. We've been inundated this week (for which we are grateful), but please bear with us, as Esther is only one person and we are trying to help her get everything done.

As for the hours, I know it's been confusing! I've just simplified the hours yesterday, to be less confusing: Mon-Fri 6am-6pm, Sat 7am-8pm, Sun 9am-4pm. When the weather warms, we plan on extending the evening hours; we'll keep you posted.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

The Sweets are Here!
- AudraMarch 14, 2009

OK, it's been waaaay too long, but we've had so much going on (and it doesn't help when you forget your password!) Muddy's downtown has been carrying on as usual with great drinks, cozy hangout spots and WiFi. And Nine Bars has been cranking out some killer sweets - fresh from-scratch cinnamon rolls, scones (blueberry, cheddar, sweet potato & candied ginger), chocolate ganache cake, bread pudding, biscotti, huge brownies, cookies, pear almond tarts, and carrot cake. Our pastry chef Esther, a Coast Guard spouse, already has a huge following for fresh chocolate eclairs every Friday & Saturday. If you want to try them, you'd better get there early!

Current hours @ Nine Bars (Located off Halstead Ext behind IHOP)
6am-6pm Mon- Wed
6am-7 or 8pm Thur & Fri
7am-8 or 9pm Sat
9am-4pm Sun

We're roasting in house every Sunday & Thursday. If you'd like to see what it's all about, stop by any Thursday evening between 4 & 7. You can chat with Dave, watch the beans roast & smell the smoke. All in-house beans are 20% off during these hours!

We're also hosting a free coffee tasting every second Saturday at 10am. Catch up with your friends while enjoying great coffees, educational conversations and treats from the kitchen. Please RSVP to 337-NINE(6463).

We're Finally Here!
- AudraJanuary 22, 2009

If you missed our Sneak Peak Party at Nine Bars, let me regale you with our new pastry chef's party menu items! Flourless chocolate torte with dark chocolate ganache & fresh pomegranate seeds, lemon curd tartlets, petite chocolate eclairs, cinnamon crumble bundt cake, raspberry cutout shortbread cookies, chocolate-coconut- caramel cake, fresh baguettes and brie, three ways. We enjoyed a great time with all our friends shoulder-to-shoulder. The jazz band even had to play in the kitchen with a speaker out front, because there just wasn't room for them! Thanks for all the support and for everyone who came out, what a great time we had!

We managed to get the doors open on Tuesday, passed our Bakery Inspection Wednesday, and began baking on Thursday. This weekend, we learn to roast. What a week!

Come by and see the new design, get great espresso drinks and Chef Esther's fantastic goodies. We're open 6am M-F, 7am Sat, and 8am Sun. We stay until 8pm most days, & 6pm on Sunday.

Location: Nine Bars Espresso, in the Flowers Printing Bldg behind IHOP, 1725A City Center Blvd.

In the Home Stretch
- AudraJan 3, 2009

Hey Everyone! We're in the home stretch! Inspections should take place this week, allowing us to finally put everything together and install the equipment.

So far, the roaster is in, although not hooked up yet. The brewer is installed, the counter is in, and most everything is done. We just can't close everything up until the electrical is checked. Then it's full speed! I can't wait to not have various espresso machine parts scattered all over my kitchen!

So, fingers crossed, TWO WEEKS! We're shooting for Jan 19th. And keep your ears peeled for the announcement of a "sneak-peak" party before then!

Roaster is in!
- Audra12-14-08

We got the roaster in this week and are now building out the counter and work area. Nick's way-cool winged logo is up on the windows. Yesterday, we cupped some really great samples from our green bean guys and can't wait to start roasting. We're shooting for an opening date somewhere in early January.

Check it out!
- AudraDecember 1, 2008

9 Bars is slowly taking shape. The bakery is painted, the front should be painted out this weekend and we're expecting the roaster next week. But you still may not be able to get coffee until after Christmas, 'cause we're waiting on contractors to finish up too.

We have hooked up with a great green bean broker, who's offering really killer beans to little guys like us so we can't wait to start playing with them! In the meantime, check out Muddy's for some killer beans this Christmas - Raven's brew out of Alaska is in the house, Counter Culture Holiday Blend is Sumatran (specifically Dolok Sangul) roasted three different ways and blended back together, and our signature First Light Coast Guard French Roast are all awesome.

Check back for more updates.
