Muddy Waters

Opened in April of 2000, Muddy's Downtown is laid back in everything except the coffee. The feel is like your personal hangout away from home, while the coffee is exceptional. Manager Beth has over 7 years experience, including finalist placement in regional barista competitions. (Think Iron Chef, only espresso). While owner Audra placed 7th in the 2001 National Barista Competition and has been judging them off and on ever since. Their espresso is a custom blend created by the coffeehouse team and if you order a macchiato, be prepared for an actual macchiato, not the SB interpretation.
Years of developing relationships with cutting-edge roasters have led to really amazing coffee opportunities. The owners traveled to Nicaragua in Feb 2004, and then the rest of the management crew went to El Salvador in Jan 2006. They, in turn, get to bring the most amazing coffees back to Elizabeth City for their customers to try. This could be the reason they hear how much they're missed when customers travel, "You just can't find coffee this good anywhere else!" Well, you can, but there aren't a whole lot of shops out there just for the coffee. We are all about the coffee. And the opportunity it affords those who grow it, but that's a whole other story we hope to get to soon |

Nine Bars Espresso
1725A City Center Blvd • Roastery, Bakery & Drive Thru
As the economy slowed in 2008, after 9 years experience, the team at Muddy's decided maybe they should try their hand at roasting themselves, to reduce costs. They also met a great Coast Guard spouse who was a trained pastry chef. So the plan for 9 Bars began. Now open, Nine Bars houses a roaster out front, where customers can watch the action, a bakery in the back, where delicious things will happen, and a drive thru on the side, so you can get it on the fly!
The site is located on Halstead Blvd, behind IHOP, in the Shoppes at City Center. The hours are; 6am-6pm Mon-Fri, 7am-5pm Sat.
