Welcome to Muddy Waters Coffeehouse

Muddy Waters Coffeehouse has been a community gathering place in Downtown Elizabeth City for more than two decades, consistently delivering exceptional coffee with a smile. You may even find art drawn on your drink.

What’s that smell? That's the unmistakable scent of freshly roasted beans, which you will smell several days a week. When it comes to crafting truly special beverages, our team cares. They have been here for years - up to 20! For us, it's not just a temporary job, but a career.

Through the years we’ve seen kids grow up, move away and come back in with their own kids. We’ve watched Coasties move away for several years and come back. It’s amazing that we get to host the community living room every day.  And we’ve lost some dear customers along the way. Ms Carolyn would walk down every day, well into her 80’s, just to hang out and “get her exercise.” Wayne and his dog, Peaches, would spend their mornings. Milton would pop in every day, on his way to work. We’ve even lost some of our own. Yet, their legacies live on and we continue to connect. Our motto still holds:  “Coffee, Conversation, Community.”

We Are Family.

To grow coffee from seed to cup takes love. A lot of love. From the farmers who baby their trees and pickers who carefully pick just the ripest cherries, to the mill workers who dry and screen the seeds, to importers who constantly taste for quality and give feedback, all the way to small roasters like us, who craft in small batches and take care that each one is the best tasting it can be. Then there are the baristas who must carefully extract each coffee and espresso so that it tastes as great as it can be (this is quite a bit more difficult than it seems). Coffee takes love all the way.

Muddy’s has hosted first dates, men’s groups, knitting circles, and even a wedding. Many of those first dates have turned into 20 year anniversaries. Friendships and alliances have formed over coffee. We have created a network. Of coffee. Of love.

Coffee is Love.

This is Home.

DOWNTOWN. There was never a question about where we wanted to be. We are fixed firmly between the historic neighborhood homes, with walking families and their pets, and the business district where professionals spend their day. We’ve seen downtown grow, shrink, evolve and host families at the holidays. And we are right in the middle of it, welcoming all to our “living room.”

  • “What a beautiful little place! So much thought went behind every item they offer. From the paintings on the buildings to the seating setup, to the sugar and cream and section, nothing was randomly chosen. The service was quick and kind.”

    -Amanda Brana

  • "Super cute place with a ton of great drink options!! I had one of the fall seasonal drinks (witch’s brew) and it was honestly the best drink I’ve ever had from a coffee place. The staff was very sweet and created a nice atmosphere in the shop as well. They even had some vegan cookie options which can be hard to come by in small coffee shops. I will definitely be coming back next time I am in EC, and everyone should check them out as well!!"

    -Emma Giovannucci

  • "Great meet up place to get a yummy treat and drink! Delicious smooth coffee ☕️ the staff is very nice and helpful! Pretty reasonable prices too. It’s a nice place to go to come in contact with all different types of people from the town. Always starting new good conversations with locals ☺️"

    -Carissa Bobko

  • "My absolute favorite place to get coffee in the area! The baristas are always super friendly and you can tell they actually enjoy and take pride in their job. If you need a boost getting going in the morning, get yourself a Trainwreck."

    -Chris Albertson

  • "The coffee is ALWAYS great. I visit this coffee house every time I'm in Elizabeth City and the coffee has been consistently good for three past 10 years or so since they've opened. The bulk coffee is fresh and their hot brews are strong and fresh as well."
